According to a statistic from Fort Wayne Community Schools, on average 60 vehicles drive around school bus stop arms every day in the school district. Indiana State law requires drivers to stop when a school bus is picking up or dropping off students.

According to the state’s website, “the law applies to all roadways except those that are divided by a physical barrier or an unimproved median. On a divided roadway, only vehicles traveling in the same direction as the school bus are required to stop.”

Officers invited the media to participate in a sting aimed at catching violators Thursday morning. However, officers did not find any violators at the sting at Rudisill and Barr Street on the south side of Fort Wayne.

Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) is boosting efforts to curb this dangerous and illegal trend. The stake-out watched three different buses stop and traffic going both ways stopped along with it. However, police said most of the time vehicles going the opposite direction keep driving past the stop arms, which is illegal.
